Dr. Field attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from 1980-1985, receiving his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering. He completed the Medical Scientist Training (M.D./Ph.D.) Program in Bioengineering at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1993. For his doctoral research, Dr. Field studied spatiotemporal analysis of brain evoked potentials under Prof. Daniel Graupe; he also studied microwave effects on action potentials in snail neurons under Profs. James Lin and William O'Neill. Dr. Field's postgraduate training included a medical internship at Northwestern University/Evanston Hospital (1993-94), residency in diagnostic radiology at Rush- Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center (1994-98), and fellowship in neuroradiology at Wake Forest University (Bowman Gray) in Winston-Salem, NC (1999-2001). He is currently Associate Professor (Tenure-Track) of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering. His research interest is quantitative magnetic resonance imaging of CNS white matter disease and repair, particularly using diffusion tensor, magnetization transfer, and T1/T2-relaxometric imaging techniques. A primary goal of his research is non-invasive tracking of myelin repair following glial cell transplantation.
