Deepak V. Gopal, MD
Faculty, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health

Dr. Deepak Gopal's practice focuses on the application of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy to gastrointestinal disease.

Dr. Gopal’s specific areas of interest and advanced training include EUS (endoscopic ultrasound) with FNA (fine needle aspiration), commonly used in the staging and evaluation of gastrointestinal malignancies (e.g., esophageal, gastric, pancreas/biliary, posterior mediastinal masses, submucosal lesions and rectal tumors); ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) for evaluation of disorders of the biliary system and pancreas; and screening and surveillance for gastrointestinal malignancies, particularly colon cancer and Barrett's esophagus (a premalignant lesion that could potentially lead to esophageal cancer).

Dr. Deepak Gopal has a dedicated interest in Barrett’s esophagus, and also performs endoscopic therapy for Barrett’s esophagus and high grade dysplasia (e.g., BARRX - radiofrequency ablation; and PDT - photodynamic therapy). He is also the director of the Capsule Endoscopy program, and performs small bowel and esophageal capsule endoscopy for the evaluation of small intestinal pathology and esophageal varices. Dr. Gopal’s interest in small bowel capsule endoscopy has also led him to be trained in and perform double balloon-enteroscopy (DBE) examinations, a relatively new technique to advance further into the small intestine to treat certain small bowel pathology.
